Event Highlights
Jan-Paul Heering: Gain insights from a Supreme Court lawyer at BarentsKrans, Lange Voorhout, as he delves into the legacy of Hugo Grotius, The Hague's founding figure of international law.

- Benjamin Duerr: Get acquainted with German-Dutch diplomat, international lawyer and  writer of The Dream of The Hague: The Hague Peace Conferences and the Emergence of a New World Order. Duerr will explore The Hague's historical role in promoting world peace.

- Henrieke Buenger from World's Youth for Climate Justice: Learn from the experiences of youth activists and lobbyists at the International Court of Justice in the Peace Palace, emphasizing the crucial role of young people in climate justice.

SPEAKERS

Jan-Paul Heering studied theology in Leiden, where he earned his PhD in 1992 with a dissertation titled "Hugo Grotius as Apologist for the Christian Religion: A Study of His Work *De veritate religionis christianae* (1640)."From 1992 to 1994, he studied law in Utrecht. Since April 1, 1995, he has been an attorney at the Supreme Court in The Hague, initially at the office of the State Advocate (Pels Rijcken & Drooglever Fortuijn), and later at BarentsKrans U.A. (since 2002 as a partner). Jan-Paul specializes as an attorney in civil cassation procedures. As a theologian, he is a member of the Remonstrant Brotherhood.
Benjamin Duerr is a German-Dutch international lawyer, diplomat, and writer on law, war and peace. He has worked in various international roles for the Dutch government, for Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege and his foundation, and the Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Centre in Stockholm. He published a widely praised biography of Matthias Erzberger, the man who ended the First World War. As an awardwinning journalist, he published widely in leading media outlets in three languages, such as Al Jazeera English and The Atlantic, Der Spiegel and Die Zeit (German), De Volkskrant, NRC, and De Groene Amsterdammer (Dutch). He appears as an expert on international law and global affairs in the media, including on the BBC, Foreign Affairs, the German public broadcaster ARD, and others.
Henrieke Buenger is the Deputy European Front Coordinator of World‘s Youth for Climate Justice, a global youth organization working on seeking an advisory opinion on States climate change responsibilities from the International Court of Justice. She holds a degree in Environmental Law and is currently pursuing a Masters in Environmental Science to further deepen her understanding of our changing climate.
